Ballarpur (formerly Balharshah) is a city and a municipal council in Chandrapur district in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is the second largest city in the district.
Ballarpur is a
historical city having rare memories of ancient "Gond Empire". At the
middle of 13th century, when Yadao kingdom of Devgad and Mana Kingdom of
Vairagad declines towards destruction, a brave fellow named 'Kol Bhill' from
Rajgond community comes forward to organize all his communal colleagues. His
son "Bhim Ballarshah" the first king of their Shirpur state was
crowned somewhere in 1247 A.D. After three generations, his successor king
"Adiya Ballarshah" son of Hirshah, prefers east bank of Wardha river
for his capital form administrative lookout. He constructed his fort on the
bank of river in the year 1322 A. D. and named this capital as
"Ballarpur" on his own name. Later his sixth successor king
"Khandkya Balalrshah" shifted his capital form Ballarpur to
Chandrapur.
Shifting of
capital to Chandrapur kept the city unattended many days. The internal family
clashes in Royal family lead towards decline of empire. In about 1751, maratha
king Raghuji Bhosle defeated the last king of Gond empire
"Nilkanthshah", and prisoned him in Ballarpur fort. The english
kingdom takes control of fort in 1818, and deputy commissioner was appointed to
govern the district. The municipal council comes into existence after
independence in 1949. (04/01/1949)
